The students of the JUAS 2019 course on “The physics of particle accelerators” travelled to Grenoble on 21 January to visit the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF), where they were welcomed by Pantaleo Raimondi, Director of Accelerators and Jean-Luc Revol, Operations Manager who had organized the visit. Jean-Luc Revol presented the existing accelerator complex and its ongoing major upgrade towards a “fourth generation” synchrotron facility, for achieving higher brilliance thanks to reduced horizontal beam size by means of a totally new storage ring based on a multi-bend achromat lattice.

In spite of the heavy construction work on the upgrade project that precluded access to the accelerator tunnel, the students could visit the experimental area housing the “light lines” (picture 1 at the top) and the assembly hall with the components of the new storage ring (picture 2 below). After lunch at the ESRF cafeteria, the students attended the lectures of Thomas Perron on “Injection and Extraction” and worked on his tutorial (picture 3 below).
